![]() Teams from the era include Lotus, Williams and Ferrari, and the corresponding historic cars. Codemasters' system of replays continues, which allows players to rewind time a few instances per race.Ĭlassic Mode brings tracks like Estoril, Imola, Brands Hatch and Jerez to your living room, with famous drivers like Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, Nigel Mansell and others. And that's a good thing: if it was any harder, we probably would have quit in frustration. In-game damage can be adjusted to visual-only, full or off, but even on full we found it pretty easy to keep our car going for an entire race. Remember, This ain't no drift competition, rookie. It still allows for aggressive powerslides that slow you down immensely. That seems to offer the most realistic version of piloting a 200-mph rocket through your living room. While playing, we set our options to a heavy wheel weight, lots of force feedback and medium traction control. In the previous game, we used to be able to make the podium once in a while, even in “intermediate” mode, but not anymore. We did love that when we finished well above expectations, even if that only means eighth place, you get a hearty “atta boy” from your team.īesides the new modes and updated drivers and cars, how does this version of the game stack up against previous generations? “F1 2013” takes a bit more skill than the 2010 game. Luckily, the lower team bosses are seriously realistic - only complaining when you don't hit their objective, which usually is fair. We also finished races in the mid-teens, which would seem like a loss. With the competitors on “intermediate” difficulty, we usually started in the mid-teens. We found that the best way to play is to practice for about 20 minutes, then head to qualifying, using plenty of restarts until you get a near-perfect lap. From the garage you can look at stats, other drivers' times, weather, and your teammate's setup, before heading on to the track. It feels especially exciting when, from a first-person view, you strap on the helmet and slide inside the car. Using a gaming rig and steering wheel controller is always the best way to go with these sims. We made it up to Williams before we were itching to hit the track. That means no jumping in with Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren or Red Bull. The objective of the two-day, 10-test event is to find your way onto a better team than Caterham or Marussia (sorry guys), since you can only start Career Mode with a team from the bottom half of the leader board. The problem, as we see it, is that all of the computer-controlled drivers use the boosts whenever possible, so you better be adept with the buttons quick or risk being left in 20th place. Players get to do braking and acceleration tests, practice hitting apexes and learn to use the KERS and DRS, which we found to be the most difficult to get used to. The young driver's test, which takes place at the Yaz Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, is a great way to get a feel for the game before your first (virtual) practice at Melbourne, Australia. An introductory young driver's test was added to the Career Mode, and now the game also has a Scenario Mode, where you have to hold off a field of competitors for a few laps or pass a few specific drivers in different challenges. The newest version of the game features updated rules, tire changes and remodeled vehicle handling to reflect the changes. We hadn't played with the series since the first version was released in 2010. The Xbox version will be downloadable next week, and the retail versions will follow. Currently, complete digital versions are available at the PlayStation store and on Steam for PC for $60. We'll admit we were pumped when our review copy arrived unexpectedly on Friday morning ahead of the game's retail release. New for this year is Classic Mode, which pits you against some of the Formula One greats from the '70s, '80s and '90s. Codemasters' F1 simulator is back for 2013 with all the drivers, cars and tracks from the current season.
